GradLeaders Career Service platform receives 400% more job actions with Textkernel’s AI solutions and semantic technology

About Gradleaders:

GradLeaders was founded in 1993 under the name “Careers OnLine” in Columbus, Ohio, United States. Initially, the company focused on providing online job search and career management tools for college students and recent graduates. In 2004, the company rebranded itself as “GradLeaders” to better reflect its dedication to helping graduates launch their careers. GradLeaders continued to grow and adapt its platform, becoming a leading provider of career services software for colleges, universities and employers worldwide.

The Challenge:

Gradleaders was fighting against competition in the market for several years and around 2019, they were losing the battle due to well funded competitors with prices they could not undercut. This resulted in losing revenue stream and the amount of jobs they could offer on their platform.

“We had more comprehensive functionality, but we weren’t providing as many jobs, and we started to hear that even from our graduate business schools -we want to keep using you. But we have this side thing that we’re doing with competitors, so that our students have access to all their jobs too because we don’t want them to miss out on an opportunity. So we’re paying your competitor to provide us their jobs while we’re using your software, which is superior to theirs.”

At that point GradLeaders started looking at changes to the product. David Hoy, Senior Vice President at GradLeaders, mentioned they lost clients who stated “I don’t want to go to another provider, but the University is forcing my hand”.  This sparked GradLeaders’ investigation into product changes and enhancement; changing the direction of the product to stay above the competition. The leadership team recognized that the number of jobs they were providing was a limitation of their platform although they were already importing jobs from external feeds such as ZipRecruiter, College Recruiter and Monster. Gradleaders was providing job postings as an offering to the candidates at the universities using their platform. The problem was that the companies were all providing different amounts and sets of data. “We had all the jobs posted into our system in one place of the menu”, says David. “And we had all these external feeds coming in, posted in another place off the menu and the students weren’t interested in going to both places and doing 2 different searches to find their jobs”

The Solution:

GradLeaders clients did not only need access to a sufficient number of jobs, they also needed sufficient search criteria to narrow down their job search from a single menu. “We just wanted the ability to get a feed of jobs with the required fields and data we could search on in our system”, David indicated.

Textkernel gave GradLeaders access to all the US jobs at the time, between 4 million and 10 million jobs. That solved the challenge of insufficient jobs within the application. Textkernel provided GradLeaders a demo and sample access to the Textkernel portal, which not only gave access to the Jobs Data application but to additional functionalities as well.

That is when David saw the opportunity to do a lot more.“There were a couple of things that attracted me. First of all, the depth of data, just the fields of information. But then, when I started looking at additional functionalities, the ability to normalize related terms, or synonym searches, the relevance scoring and all the artificial intelligence behind all of that, pushed me to think we can do way more than just receive a bunch of jobs from Textkernel.”

GradLeaders explored the opportunity of intelligent searches based on related terms and the ability of scoring jobs based on their match. According to David, what really sealed the deal is the ability for GradLeaders to take their own jobs and feed them into Textkernel to be parsed. This way they have the same functionalities as Textkernels Jobs Data.

“Textkernel provided us the opportunity to put all data/jobs in one place”, says David. “With that we’re providing our users with one portal for all their searches, instead of having to do separate searches to find opportunities. At the same time we decided to take advantage of all the API’s Textkernel offered, and to execute a single search and return jobs that were provided by Textkernels Jobs Data along with jobs that were posted to this school individually.”


With the help of Textkernel’s Source & Match APIs GradLeaders decided to take it a step further. They found students having trouble using the right key words and doing effective job searches, because they were simply unaware of the right words. They decided the portal needed to do it for them. GradLeaders built a widget called JobMatch that appears on their dashboard , using Textkernel’s Source and Match APIs. The widget will find user relevant jobs based on the information they have in their profile. GradLeaders takes their resume or profile information and converts this into a search, then it is sent to Textkernel and matches are returned based on their profiles.

Outcome:

GradLeaders created various dashboards in their Career Center to compare how many searches are done and how many jobs are being applied to in January 2023 versus the amounts in the previous year. David says: “We see upwards of 400% increase in engagement, in the number of searches that are being executed and the number of jobs that are being used with the new tool that we’ve built with support of Textkernel.”

GradLeaders’ search started with simply adding Jobs Data to their application to give their users access to all available jobs out there. Currently they take full advantage of:
– Job Parsing – for both initial index and on-going new jobs.
– Jobs Data API  – allowing clients (students) to view all jobs aggregated by Textkernel.
– Source & Match Jobs – enables users to initiate and perform a semantic search query on a search index database from job descriptions.

DPG Media

Due to too high an outflow and too low an influx, DPG Media Distribution urgently needs 1,000 freelance newspaper deliverers. But how do you make newspaper delivery appealing to young people, without scaring off the important target group of adults and seniors?

DPG called in Jobsrepublic and Textkernel and opted for a diversified campaign with its own story for each target group. “After just two weeks, we noticed that the quality of the registrations was much better. We now often get hold of the interested parties immediately.”

Textkernel has made it possible to apply via WhatsApp and the applications at DPG landed directly in their ATS. Because three different campaigns were used for three different target groups, the tone of voice per campaign was completely different. For example, the conversation in WhatsApp was much more informal for students than for DPG’s older target group. However, it is a lot more accessible for all target groups to apply via WhatsApp, because you do not have to fill in a lengthy application form with all kinds of attachments.

Each target group has its own story

Young people think newspaper delivery is not hip, not cool, not sexy. But it pays well and you can do it at times when you wouldn’t otherwise be doing anything else quickly. Completely different motives play a role with seniors. These people do not deliver newspapers for the money, but see it more as a healthy daily activity and often enjoy doing it from social involvement. To seduce these target groups, you have to serve them individually with their own story.

The personalization at candidate level is not limited to the image, texts and presentation of the offer. For the elderly, for example, the focus is mainly on a callback function, where the young people can immediately start a conversation with a virtual assistant from Textkernel. For example, the elderly can immediately see how many steps they have taken on their pedometer, while young people are more concerned with the euros. All behavior on the page is measured and used for next steps.

Regiodienst

To help both candidates and clients as well and as quickly as possible, Regiodienst recently began using a new integration.

With this integration, the best match between candidate and company is automatically made and the first contact with the candidate is then made via an automated messaging flow. With this, the mediation agency sets a new standard when it comes to smart use of data and automation during the recruitment process. Nelson Jonker, partner at Regiodienst, talks about his expectations of this new integration.

Getting in touch with suitable candidates is a very time-consuming process. Textkernel’s solutions helps with that.

The will to do things smarter

Regiodienst has been in the world of recruitment and selection for 12 years, helping candidates find their dream jobs in engineering. “With such a large database, we felt the need to do things smarter. So that we can work more efficiently and help more candidates. From that need came the desire to further automate the recruitment process. That’s how we ended up with a new integration of The Virtual Sales Recruiter, a combination of labor market data, matching techniques within our ATS Carerix.”

Roderik Visser, Senior Customer Success Manager at Carerix, sees this as a new opportunity and positive development for the recruitment process. “At Carerix we look at this integration with happy eyes. Especially for recruiters who were already using labor market data, the addition of automated matching and the use of automations to their workflow is a smart and logical next step.”

Let’s explain

The integration used by Regiodienst consists of two steps. The first step is finding suitable vacancies for candidates: making the match. With the deployment of The Virtual Sales Recruiter, recruiters immediately save a lot of time. This virtual assistant helps recruiters find matches within their ATS quickly and efficiently, with access to both internal and external candidate and job sources. Together, the matching options and the labor market and vacancy data provide optimal insight into the labor market.

Once The Virtual Sales Recruiter has made a suitable match, the second step is to contact the candidate at the right time. “Making contact with suitable candidates is a very time-consuming process,” Nelson said. Textkernel helps with that. With fully automated conversations, you reach candidates more easily and they themselves decide at what time they read and respond to the message.

Organize integration based on way of working

Regiodienst is currently testing the service in several steps. “You have to organize such an integration well based on your way of working and you can’t apply it overnight. You can think of it as a new way of recruiting. That requires a lot of testing in the initial phase. The first colleagues are now working on it and sharing their experiences within Regiodienst. Thanks to the labor market data, we have come into contact with new companies. This allows us to place more and more candidates. That used to be a lot more difficult. More and more people are working with The Virtual Sales Recruiter. But we are still in the testing phase.”

Adelbert Smal and Jan Govaerts, initiators of The Virtual Sales Recruiter, also see this as the next step in automating the recruitment process. Adelbert: “With The Virtual Sales Recruiter, Regiodienst is taking a huge step forward in working smarter with more time for the right candidates, matches and new clients. The most promising leads and candidates are automatically prepared for you.” Jan agrees: “With the developments in data and matching technology in the market, it is increasingly possible to set up this kind of end-to-end integration in your recruitment process, to save maximum time and no longer miss opportunities.”

Once the match is made by The Virtual Sales Recruiter, the next challenge awaits: reaching the candidate. “At Regional Service we are on the phone a lot, but candidates in engineering are not always easy to reach by phone. They are often on the construction site and often are not in a position to answer the phone. Then it’s very convenient when you can use a automation through Textkernel,” Nelson says.

“With their automation, we contact candidates with our job offerings. Candidates can view and respond to these job postings at a time that is most convenient for them.” Textkernel then automatically continues the conversation. “The purpose of the contact is for the candidate to make an appointment with the recruiter. The candidate can schedule the appointment himself, making it more accessible. It saves us an enormous amount of time. Time that we like to invest at the moment the appointment is made.”

More personal through automations

“Isn’t recruitment really a peoples business and shouldn’t you keep it personal?” That’s a question Textkernel’s Luuk van Neerven often gets. “With all the automation we are actually making the profession very personal. We can help the candidate much faster and invest more time in the personal conversation. It is also easier and more fun for the candidate, without old-fashioned job alerts via e-mail and endless searches on job sites.”

Nelson says the first successes for Regiodienst have already been achieved. “Using the labor market data, we have already been able to provide a number of candidates with wonderful new jobs. And we haven’t even used the entire integration yet. That bodes well for the future.”

What was the situation like at 24/7 drive before you partnered with Textkernel?

“Contact with the candidates was mainly by phone, email, text or just in person at one of our branches,” says Birgit. “Our solution was unfortunately one-way and thus could not be answered by our temporary workers.”

This was reason enough for 24/7 drive to look for a partner who could streamline their communication channels. Birgit: “We started looking for a structural solution for the entire organization in which we are always available for our candidates as well as our clients, and which at the same time is deployable for all our branches in Europe. After all, we are located in 7 European countries. Previously it was not yet possible, for a non-registered candidate, to start the conversation with us via WhatsApp itself. This too is now possible. And through Textkernel’s routing, the candidate is always forwarded to the right branch.”

How did you end up cooperating with Textkernel?

“A must have for us was interfacing with our ATS system Bullhorn. A couple of years ago this was not possible, which stopped us from choosing Textkernel at the time”, explains Birgit. “But when I heard that a connection had been realized, I immediately contacted Luuk van Neerven, to resume discussions. Our organization is too big to implement yet another separate system next to the existing ones. That’s why it’s really perfect that we now have the connection with Bullhorn to communicate on multiple fronts and you can always find the conversations back with the candidate.”

How did the implementation go? And how did your colleagues experience Textkernel’s solutions?

“Honestly, the implementation went very well! Our contact person Gabrielle Hellingwerf was always available for us and responded quickly. If we fired too many questions at her, there was room to schedule a quick online consultation to address them together”, said Birgit.

Do you notice any of the added value of the Candidate Engagement solutions?

Birgit: “Our colleagues at the various branches use Textkernel by Bullhorn’s solutions quite a lot and really like the fact that they can now communicate with our candidates in a quick and easy way when they don’t pick up their phone or when you want to quickly let them know something. We also see an upward trend in the number of applications on our website. More and more candidates are finding their way to us! And that way we are closer to our candidates.”

Do you have any final words for prospective users?

“From our colleagues we receive some comments about the mandatory use of the WhatsApp templates. This makes it a little less personal and you can’t always send the message you would like right away. This is something to take into consideration when considering this solution. Fortunately, the many advantages outweigh the negatives and that’s why we started using Textkernel’s Candidate Engagement after all. We are already busy implementing the next project! We can therefore definitely recommend the various Textkernel solutions!”

How can you optimally help job seekers find a new job? So no longer just dealing with administrative actions, but adding value where it is actually needed. Carlijn Balink, Online Data Marketeer at Modoc, came to Textkernel with that question.

Modoc was founded in 2010 by Marja de Heer and Linda van Wensen, mother and daughter. The name Modoc is therefore a combination of the Dutch words for MOeder (mother) and DOChter. (daughter) With their unique view of the recruitment and HR industry, they have been distinctive in the field from the start.

Personal values and talent management are important at Modoc, which has resulted in great collaborations and long-term relationships. With these two pillars in mind, it is important for Modoc employees to be able to communicate quickly with their (prospective) candidates. Carlijn Balink, Online Data Marketeer at Modoc, knocked on Textkernel’s door to see if Textkernel’s solutions could help Modoc further.

What was the situation like at Modoc groep before you started working with Textkernel?

Carlijn: “Before we worked with Textkernel, we just used WhatsApp Business. At our two locations in Tholen and Etten-Leur, there was a dedicated iPhone with WhatsApp Business on it, which we could use to send messages to our professionals. This was in the beginning, as a first step, an excellent solution to speed up our contact with professionals and of course to keep up with the digital developments But because we work hybrid at Modoc and not every colleague is in the office every day, that one iPhone was no longer sufficient. Who manages WhatsApp? How do we make sure we don’t miss any messages? Does everyone record the conversations in our system? This was the biggest drawback for us, so we started looking further.”

Eventually, Modoc ended up with Textkernel, a choice they are still happy with. “With Textkernel we can do everything from within Bullhorn,” says Carlijn. “The platform for sending messages to professionals works easily and is very accessible. Everyone can have chat conversations with professionals from behind their laptops and the conversations are automatically saved in our ATS. We can take over conversations from each other and everyone sees what is being communicated. This is very important for our business because we want to switch quickly and be aware of each other.”

Do you notice the added value of the various automations?

Carlijn: “Because the latent job seeker is our largest target group, we also notice that many professionals do not answer their phone during working hours. Automations saves time for us, the candidates, and ultimately for the customer.”

“The implementation process went smoothly. In my own environment within the portal, I could easily take the steps that were necessary and I also had to get in touch with Esther, Customer Success Manager at Textkernel, a few times to discuss everything.”

Amsterdam, Netherlands – Textkernel, a global leader in AI-powered recruitment and labor market intelligence technology, is pleased to announce its partnership with the Office for National Statistics (ONS), the UK’s largest independent producer of official statistics. ONS, the recognised national statistical institute, is responsible for collecting and publishing statistics related to the economy, population, and society at various levels.

After a highly competitive public tender process, Textkernel has been chosen as the vendor of choice and will provide ONS with labor market data from their market intelligence solution, Labor Market Insights enabling the extraction of valuable and evidence-based insights. As stated in the public tender, The Office for National Statistics wanted a comprehensive set of outputs for detailed analysis of local labor markets within the UK, including job occupations and skills in demand. Additionally, the Department for Education, and the Unit for Future Skills within it will review educational requirements, apprenticeships, and training schemes based on companies’ requests.
Textkernel’s solution will deliver weekly data feeds dating back to 2017, allowing ONS to ingest and utilise the market data for various reporting purposes. The data will be mapped to geo-focused boundaries such as UK local authorities and Travel To Work Area (TTWA).

Volume recruitment is the order of the day for recruiting couriers in the 13 countries where Just Eat Takeaway is active. Process hundreds of thousands of applicants in a personal way, supported by handy technology. This is the basis for the 24/7 hybrid WhatsApp solution that Just Eat Takeaway has developed in collaboration with Textkernel.

In the Netherlands, candidates are offered the opportunity to immediately schedule an appointment with the recruiter. In Spain and Israel, a Q&A flow is first used, in which the candidate receives 3 questions. 3 times a ‘YES’ means highest priority and these candidates go directly to the calendar functionality. With one or more answers with ‘NO’, the chatbot transfers the conversation to the recruiter to take over. These candidates have lower priority and the recruiter can look at the possibilities with the candidate.

What if a large proportion of your applicants are difficult to reach, but connecting with them is essential for a smooth recruitment process? They experienced higher success rates when contacting candidates, leading to a notable decrease in rejected candidates due to being ‘unreachable.’ These efforts resulted in a 50% increase in conversion rates and a 14% reduction in time-to-hire.
